What Remains
By Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan
When the phone rings
breaking the silence of my lonely flat,
I rush to pick up
thinking
it must be you.
I have forgotten
that we have just spoken.
Your texts come each day as well.
With news of your activities,
and photos of your friends
who I once used to know.
Your daily calls are short,
for my questions
are always the same.
When will I see you?
When will you come?
You left so many years ago
and I saw you off with pride,
sharing with many
the news of scholarships
and studies.
But I did not know,
that solitude and waiting
was my reward.
