The Last Rite
By Lynn White

You’d said your goodbyes.

You knew it was time

for nature to reclaim

your body,

your bones

and your flesh.

But not your spirit,

nature left that behind.

And that spirit will grow here in us,

not like funeral flowers fading,

but bright like those in nature

each living in its own season

with its own natural rituals,

triggered by time, place,

thoughts and memories

which live on beyond you.

And that is enough,

that feels right.
