Modern Sculptures
The cities of Geneva, Laussane and Lyon are decorated with modern sculptures of celebrated sculptors. These sculptures add beauty, grace and at times, a dash of quirkiness to the lndscape. Anhad Jai Singh captures the beauty and poise of these works of Art with unerring accuracy.
Poise
Poise, a sculpture by Eleanor Cardozo was installed at the President Wilson Hotel on the Geneva lakeside after the 2012 London Olympics.
Melancholy
Melancholy, a sculpture created by Albert Gyorgy, portrays the void that grief leaves us with. The sculpture depicts a figure made of copper sitting on a bench slumped over, with a giant hole in the center of it. This hole represents the massive void that we all feel when we lose someone dear to us
The Weight of Oneself
Designed by artists Elmgreen & Dragset, this representation shows a standing man carrying another man, inanimate, in his arms, as if saved from drowning. The faces of the two characters are identical. The man thus becomes his own savior as well as his own burden.
The Resting Leaf (Feuille se reposant )
Created by Hans Harp, this work is an immense bronze piece, which pivots, turns and dances on its axis despite its imposing size. Its supple contours invite the viewer to take a walk around it, and catch a leaf spinning in the wind. Inspired by nature and its life forces, the sensual curves of Feuille se reposant (Resting Leaf) seem to suggest a hand, a body, a dance, a twirling fabric or a petal.
Michelin Gastronomy
The statue of Paul Bocuse, the man who put the Michelin starred gastronomy of Lyon centre stage after Worl War II.
The Pelican
The Pelican stands eternally frozen in flight in St Sulpice, near Laussane.
The Man
The blck granite sculpture stands highlighted against the enveloping, snow clad branches of the tree that seems to dwarf its contours. Symbolises man dwarfed by nature.
Broken Chair
Broken Chair is a monumental sculpture in wood by the Swiss artist Daniel Berset, constructed by the carpenter Louis Genève. It is constructed of 5.5 tons of wood and is 12 metres high. It depicts a giant chair with a broken leg and stands across the street from the Palace of Nations, in Geneva.
